Lockwoodland's News

This post is exactly what it says on the tin - it's time for a second week of Threadless submissions. Hurrah!

First up is in fact the very first design I created with the intention of submitting to Threadless, before getting sidetracked by not one but two design challenges. Confuse friends and future archaeologists with this design that proudly displays a small collection of swallowed artefacts in your (perhaps slightly oversized) stomach.

This week I also submitted my first Threadless slogan, so if you'd love to sport the fine phrase "The video game is afoot!" on your very own tee, then get voting.

In lieu of a conventional job, I've decided to try my hand at submitting T-shirt designs to that lovely website we all know as Threadless.

Full of clever little arty types, Threadless allows its users to submit both designs and slogans for tees and other apparel, which the community then score. My plan is to release a new design (and perhaps even a few slogans) every week for the foreseeable future, so first up is a double bill of entries for some of their design challenges.

The one pictured above is for Threadless Loves Zip Hoodies2, and there's another one for Threadless Loves Patterns. Now score them to your heart's content! (A nice big 5 would be nice... and don't hesitate to tick the box saying you'd buy it, either.)

Over this past uni year, betwixt hasty reviews of Doctor Who episodes, I've also been beavering away on actual artwork in the form of various poster designs.

Whether for a university production, an awards ceremony or a play being taken up to the Fringe, each one has its own particular flavour whilst retaining my own personal touch.

They've all been for friends and internal events thus far, but should you desire a poster for your gig/film/missing cat, don't hesitate to contact me.

So here for your perusal are my five most recent commissions, together with little commentaries on their creation. Or something similarly pompous.

Doctor Who: Series 6: A Good Man Goes to War

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS IF YOU'RE LATE TO THE PARTY!

Mid-series finale? Is that not a bit of a contradiction in terms? It's almost as ludicrous as having a finale right at the start of the series. Oh no, wait... we already had that, didn't we.

Bless Steven Moffat, but I never remember thinking "Hey, you know what I want more of in Doctor Who? Series finales." Ever since Russell T. Davies jumped the proverbial shark with the finale to end all finales - aptly titled The End of Time - the one thing I haven't yearned for is more event episodes.

Indeed, the only flaw I'd attribute to the opening two-parter of this series was the fact that it had all the enormity of a finale without the prior build up of an entire series. By the end of this year's run, we'll have had three big "finales" - should Moffat be wary of blowing his top by constantly trying to outdo himself?

Not on current evidence, since those we've witnessed thus far have been absolute belters. No longer is the show re-treading the old "classic baddie trying to destroy the universe" yarn, but instead plays with every science fiction element in its arsenal. From memory to moon-landings, childbirth to doppelgängers, Steven Moffat is flipping the bird to the naysayers who thought he couldn't deliver on so-called "big" episodes.

Doctor Who: Series 6: The Doctor's Wife

WARNING: PROBABLY DOESN'T CONTAIN SPOILERS!

Back again with more Doctor Who musings. Better late than never, eh? Skipping The Curse of the Black Spot, let's move swiftly onto the The Doctor's Wife. After all, I think it's probably best.

Well, this has been quite disorientating, huh? With three very distinct episode styles thrown at us thus far, Series 6 is turning into a bag of pick 'n' mix that's bigger on the inside.

First, there was the Moffat mind-blower; an opening two-part tour de force with more inexplicable mysteries than you could shake a moon landing at. Impossible astronaut? Dead Doctor? Creepy orphanage? Regenerating girl? What's going on?! Bless Steven Moffat for thinking that any newcomers could possibly join in at this point. N'yaaaww.

And then there was Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Spot. Kind of unfortunate for writer Steven Thompson to have to follow the brilliant insanity of the series opener, but his standalone, light-hearted tale of many clichés definitely took a blow. And while we're on the subject, I swear some of the peripheral pirate characters just seemed to disappear partway through...

Doctor Who: Series 6: The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon

WARNING: MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!

So, my first proper blog post bar a little introduction, and we're already onto a Doctor Who review? Start as you mean to go on, I suppose...

One thing I ought to have mentioned in that first entry is that I am, unashamedly, a ridiculous Doctor Who fan. More as a warning than a fun fact. Since the show burst back onto British television screens in the spring of 2005, I have become increasingly obsessed with the damn thing as each series has rolled in.

Now in its seventh year and the sixth full series since the revival, it seemed only fitting that I should finally be able to splurge my thoughts and opinions up here in blog form. If you want to read them then that's cool, but it's more cathartic than anything else, to be honest.

For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, I recommend Wikipedia (or perhaps this just isn't the blog for you).

Stetsons Are Cool

It is with open arms that I welcome you through the shiny new gates of this, my website... and that. It's been a long time coming, but I hope you're pleased to see it at last. Both of you.

"So, what's the point of all this whiz-bangery?" I hear you ask, "All this fanfare? I've never even heard of you! What's that? Internet? Things on sticks? My legs hurt."

Well, I'll tell you what it is. Quit whining, honestly...

First off, I've been meaning to do this for a long while now. In 2004 I got into Flash animation for the first time, learning the basics (the very basics), and building a little website to start housing them.

Though actual education got in the way of the animation, my new-found interest in digital drawing led to an account on deviantART and as it stands, more than 5 years of dicking about with illustration.

Now, with a nice big back-catalogue of stuff behind me, I thought it about time to make myself a proper portfolio website for all my pictures and, indeed, moving pictures. Yeah? And a blog thing.

Hello there Newgrounds,

Long time fan but first time poster. Basically, I've been an internet artist for a long while now, mainly through my deviantART page, but thought it about time I joined the Newgrounds bunch and flogged my wares.

I dabble in illustration, animation and (more often than not) procrastination on these fair internet seas, and wondered if I could sail on into your harbour. Right, enough of the nautical analogies.

Big-ass thanks to those who have for some reason already been voting and commenting on the highlights I've uploaded from my artistic back catalogue, you are too kind. No really.

Anyway, I just wanted to advertise the fact that I've been building a little portfolio website to house all my junk for a while now, and that that very site opens at midnight tonight. Imagine that!

So, head over to mushonastick.com at 0 o'clock for fun, fun times. And a blog. And... shit. I'll leave you with one my little animation tests for the time being.

TTFN.
